Neighborhood Pride and Leadership
During a recent summer, recycling became an important part of the summer lunch program at Almeda Park Apartments' Community Center. Recycling was a hot topic from the first day of the program. Several of the children gathered to hear the Activity Coordinator read aloud Long Live Earth by Meighan Morrison, a book about the importance of caring for our world. Children also helped set up a recycling center in the community center, making boxes to separate paper, cardboard and plastic.
At first, some children and teenagers felt inconvenienced by having to make sure their trash was thrown away in a certain manner. They eventually came around and began to take pride in doing something positive for the planet. The effort caused children and teens alike to ask questions and share the importance of recycling with each other. Many of the children’s families soon decided to begin recycling in their own households.
