Family Skills Development

One of the benefits of our Family Skills Development activities is the job-readiness program offered and how it works with other components of the "Good Neighbor Program." On a Saturday morning at the Bristol Apartments, Ms. Liz, the Activity Coordinator, was preparing to teach her MS Windows and Office Applications session when she was approached by two young men inquiring about computer classes. The young men informed her that they wanted to learn how to apply for jobs. Ms. Liz pressed for further information and learned the pair lacked transportation and didn't know how to use computers. In addition, she discovered they had difficulty reading, which would make certain parts of each application hard to understand.

Encouraged by Inter-Faith to be flexible and work toward a solution, Ms. Liz decided to restructure her class objective to help the young men develop a plan for their job search. She began by concentrating their job search effort on nearby locations and assisting them with filling out applications.

By facilitating an environment that allows Activity Coordinators to be flexible within the resident services program, Texas Inter-Faith reinforces a bottom-up approach to meeting residents' needs quickly. These two residents were willing to ask for help and communicate their needs because Ms. Liz was seen as a trusted advisor within the Bristol Apartments community. In return, Ms. Liz was impressed by their initiative, humbled by their situation, and honored to help them beat the odds and change the path their lives were on.

  • Two residents increased their computer proficiency while improving their literacy level.
  • Ms. Liz was made aware of another method of assisting residents via the adaptability of the "Good Neighbor Program."
