History

Texas Inter-Faith began in 1966 when nine individuals from different religious backgrounds—Catholic, Jewish and Protestant—joined together in an effort to provide low-cost housing for senior citizens in the community. These nine visionaries were Gilbert Thweatt, William Beall, James Noland, Adolph O. Susholtz, Dr. Leo Horvitz, Albert Goldstein, Phyllis Bell, Clovis B. Heimsath and Paul P. Waldner, Jr. Together, this group of civic leaders established the Houston Inter-Faith Housing Corporation as a non-profit organization.

Houston Inter-Faith soon began providing resident services, gaining the appreciation and respect of residents and the community. During the economically challenging times of the 1970s, the organization expanded its mission to include multi-family low-income housing. In the mid-1990s, JOT Couch, Jr., took over as Executive Director and the organization experienced rapid growth.

In 2001, the organization was renamed Texas Inter-Faith to reflect its expanded operations throughout the state. Based on the success of our original business model, additional corporations have since been formed with similar missions to serve communities in New Mexico and the Gulf States. These corporations are now considered members of the Inter-Faith Group.
